With over 10.5 million subscribers, Dish Network is the nation's second-largest provider of satellite TV service. Dish Network offers a slightly larger channel selection than DIRECTV, and distributes its programming with a fleet of nine satellites, which provide coverage to all 50 US States and Puerto Rico (Dish Network customers outside the Continental US may need larger satellite dishes).

For customers with high definition TV sets, Dish Network offers optional HDTV equipment and service packages that give viewers access to up to 9 high definition channels, including ESPNHD, DiscoveryHD, HDNet and HDNetMovies. Dish Network also offers an extensive lineup of foreign language programming, including multiple language choices not available from its competitors.

As of January 2005, Dish Network offered local programming by satellite in 152 markets nationwide, with this number expected to increase over the coming year.
